Dick’s Well-Learned Lesson
This one is another two-part assignment. Vedah was given the assignment to write about a true incident that had happened to her or someone she knew, and then transform that incident into a story. I am not sure the backstory on this one—if any family members have any other info on the hog story, I would love to share it here.

Little Do-Be
Vedah was asked to write a 500-word description of a child. In the second assignment, Grandma was then supposed to let the child “come to life,” and to write a short piece in the voice of the child.

Laughter Turns to Tears
This very short story surprised me with its vividness, and its clear-eyed view of a shocking tragedy. The assignment for Vedah was to write a 500-word description of a place—perhaps someplace she remembered from her childhood.

A Gala Day at Rives Junction
Vedah was challenged with writing a story that contained at least 5 out of a list of 10 random words. The teachers’ notes said, “It must be convincing and logical, no matter how outlandish.”

The Storm
Grandma picked the image below—probably due to the familiarity of the barn and the surrounding scene. In her evaluation, Vedah’s teacher praised her for her use of description and for bringing the story to a satisfying conclusion.
